Director, After School Division, California Department of Education
Michael Funk, Director of the After School Division (ASD) for the California Department of Education (CDE), was appointed in January 2012 by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson. He was charged with the development and implementation of a strategic plan building upon California’s critical investment in Expanded Learning to create systems and programs that maximize outcomes for children, youth, families, schools and communities. Previously, Michael was the Founder and Executive Director of the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center (www.snbc.org) in San Francisco. Michael earned a teaching credential in Idaho, where he grew up. He has also been an ordained minister, and in this role created social justice ministries to serve urban and immigrant communities in North America.
