The Castro has one of the richest histories in the city. Once populated by dairy farms, the Castro district today is a thriving neighborhood of restored Victorian homes, bustling bars, shops, restaurants and cultural landmarks. The Castro is also widely known as steeped in activism by the gay and lesbian community. One of the most famous Castro residents and proponents for LGBT rights was former San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk.
